Drake Bay, as it really is

Agujitas has around 1,000 residents and remains one of Costa Rica's wildest destinations. Here is what every traveler needs to know before embarking.

1. How to reach Drake Bay

Boat from Sierpe (The most scenic and reliable route)

Drive or take a bus to Sierpe, leave your car at secure parking facilities (~$6/day), and take the public river boat. It winds through the Térraba-Sierpe mangroves before exiting into the Pacific ocean to reach Drake Bay (~60 minutes).

  • • Sierpe departure times: 11:30 AM and 4:00 PM.
  • • Drake Bay return times: 7:15 AM and 2:30 PM.
  • • Fare: ~$15 to $20 USD per person each way.

Domestic Flight from San José

Sansa Airlines operates daily flights from San José International (SJO) to Drake Bay airstrip (DRK), taking approximately 45 minutes. From the airstrip, local 4x4 taxis transfer guests to town in 15 minutes.

2. What you need to accept

💵 No ATMs in Town

There are no banks or ATMs in Drake Bay. While most lodges accept credit cards, cash (US dollars or Costa Rican colones) is essential for tips and small eateries.

🌊 Wet Beach Landings

Boats pull directly up to the beach. You step off the boat into ankle-to-knee deep surf. Wear water sandals or water-friendly footwear for arrival.
